It is the supposed date that Juleus Caesar was betrayed by his friend Brutus and killed by all the senators. It was made famous in the Shakespear play Juleus Caesar when a fortune teller warned "beware the Ides of March"; a good movie version is the one with Marlon Brando.

Simply an ancient term for the 15th of that month. Romulous was to have come up with that term for the 15th and 13th of some months There are also things like the Kaleds and Nones in ancient Rome concerning dates in months. Julius Caesar was to have been told to beware the Ides of March and then he actually was assassinated on March 15.
