when there a group of women...and the least attractive of them all ask you to join the entire group for drinks?
I hang around this other guy. They see us both together all the time. How possible is it that they actually want him to tag along and that's the whole scheme?

It's very possible, sometimes woman find it less intimidating to talk to the less attractive one because they don't think they will be turned down.

Looks are subjective so the least attractive to you may not be to someone else...however, it would be rude to invite you to join them when you are clearly there with someone else, and not invite him too.
If the invitation isn't issued to you both, then you could either ask if your buddy can join as well, or decline politely and say you are there with a friend but appreciate the invitation...she/they can then re-issue the invitation to you both, or accept your rejection and let the matter drop.

There is always a "hanger-on" in a group of girls. The one that makes all the others feel good about themselves. It is a symbiotic relationship. The pretty girls get to feel prettier and the ugly girl gets to feel popular. I don't know about the second part.
