i like garter stitch for a scarf, just knit every row. look at the wrapper of the yarn to see what the gauge is, that is a good guesstimate of how many stitches you need to cast on. eg, 4 rows and 6 stitches to the inch, you want a 6 inch wide scarf, cast on 36 stitches. Then knit every row, until it is long enough to wrap around your neck and the ends hang at least to your waist. you can add stripes, just change yarn at the beginning of a row.
Have fun!
ps for a matching hat, you just knit up a square in the garter stitch that is about 20 inches wide, and you seam it up the sides and gather the top. simple but nice looking!

Absolutely basic will be knit 1 purl1 until you have the width you want and then keep on going until you get the length you want. For variety, change the colour of the wool every few inches. My deceased wife left cases of knitting patterns behind if you are interested.

You tube movies are great for getting to grasp to knit. All you choose for a scarf is yarn and needles. elect a medium thickness yarn in a easy shade. dark colorations make it difficult to be certain each sew for a newbie. The yarn you chosen could have a paper band around it telling you which of them length needles you ought to use for that yarn.
