There is an artery there as well as the the part of the spine that connects to the skull. In capital punishment cases most hangman also stand to the left, as on the right is usually a priest or chaplain, the warden, and member of the court. So when they fastent he knot, it's to the left where the hangman is standing. Also on the left, are three to five other officers of the prison who each have scissors or a straight blade to cut their string that then opens the trap door to hang the individual, they have to witness the knot placement and tightness of the noose. Usually only 2 or 3 strings actually are connected to the trap door, just as only a fraction of firing squad shooters are actually firing real bullets. They do that to "ease" the mind of executioners so they don't "know who actually killed the individual."

Also, the knot must be snug to the neck behind the left ear and the noose follow from the chinline, under the chin, just below the right ear, and across the back of the neck. That is so the neck break is quick and death follows faster as the spinal cord is severed by a basilar skull fracture which means NO nerve activity whatso ever will reach the rest of the body, and that seconds after the break the artery is severed by the same fracture ensuring bleeding to death internally in minutes if the spinal cord isn't severed completely.

It's a sick way of doing things....

For a hanging, the knot of the rope is typically placed under or just behind the left ear. As the blow when the condemned drops to the end of the rope is supposed to break the neck (for modern "long-drop" hangings), this knot can add additional striking force against the head and neck.-Source

If the knot is behind either ear the rope will break the neck. If the rope is in back of the head it will strangle the person.

If done correctly the neck will snap and kill them instantly. If done incorrectly they hang there and suffocate slowly.

I don't think it matters if it's located behind the right or left ear, behind the ear is just the location that causes the greatest torque against the neck.

There's a good reason for that. It's to ensure that the neck snaps cleanly thus severing the spinal cord and causing instantaneous death. It also ruptures the carotid artery so that if by some change the miscreant survived he would die in a short time by lack of blood to the brain.

When they lead me to the gallows, remind me to turn around so that the knot will be behind my right ear. Oh, and make sure they arrange for me to land on my right leg as well. Don't wanna aggravate my bad left knee.

I think it has to do with suffering......if you cut out the blood from you right side the body takes longer to die than if you cut the blood on your left side. Left supplies the brain, right goes back to your heart!!! As long as oxygen supply gets into the brain you can still feel, think and so on!! at least for a few seconds to minutes depending on the person!!
