During WWII (and probably other wars, too), your home country was the home front. That is, for the U.S., home was the home front. People on the home front contributed to the battle by doing without certain goods (or limiting their use of certain goods) so that they could be sent to the fighting men and women. For example, many people started growing vegetable gardens (called "Victory Gardens") because doing so meant that the vegetables they once bought could be sent to the servicemen and women. Many women here, who had never worked outside their homes, started doing factory and other jobs previously done by the men who were off fighting the war. Some items (gasoline, certain foods, shoes, cars, tires, etc.) were rationed so that you had to have a ration coupon before you could buy the item. Families got ration coupons based on the number in the family and other factors. For example, a farmer would get more ration coupons for tires and gasoline because without those he would not be able to produce the crops needed to feed the fighting forces. The federal government here has the legal right to "nationalize" industry whenever it is in the best interests of the country to do so. That is, they can literally take over the factory if the owner is not willing to cooperate by producing what the government wants. I do not remember if any industries were nationalized during WWII, but I suppose it is possible. My father worked in the Bay area shipyards during WWII building ships for the U.S. Navy. He was almost 40 when the U.S. entered the war after Pearl Harbor, but he did get a draft notice. However, when his boss at the shipyard found out about it, he got my father deferred because his work on the home front building ships made him more valuable to the war effort than shipping him to Europe or Japan would have been.

Since the above-mentioned activities contributed to the war efforts, wherever those actions took place was considered part of the home front.
