It doesn't matter if you're in the USA. It DOES MATTER which state the branch of your bank is located in. State laws determine your maximum liability, not federal laws.

So, if you open a bank account at a bank that has branches all over the country - it doesn't matter. It only matters where the branch is located that you opened the account.

Some banks will pay your liability for you. So, to BEST answer your question - speak with the bank.

$50 within two business days.
$500 three to 60 days
Over 60 days. Any amount in your account.

However, for unauthorized transfers involving only your debit card number (not the loss of the card), you are liable only for transfers that occur after 60 days following the mailing of your bank statement containing the unauthorized use and before you report the loss.

Now, if you have a MasterCard or a Visa symbol on you card, you are protected by their zero liability policy if you signed for your purchase and sometimes Visa will cover pin transaction if it is carried over the interlink network.

It depends on your bank, I think. My husband's card was used once without his approval (it wasn't stolen, someone must have written down his number or something) and we were refunded the full amount to our account by the bank. We just had to call the bank and explain what happened, then fill out a form regarding the incident.

Check with your bank about their policy.
