pretty much. America has become all about image, and substance no longer matters. Hollywood, politics led the way, and all of it has trickled down to the common person.
You gotta look good rollin through the hood and when you are out - when you are IN your house, no one sees you, so who cares if its a dump!
More amazing are the people that put $10,000 worth of wheels and tires on a $4,000 car and think that makes them look cool. But it is the same basic analogy -

Makes no sense to me. Then again the house could just look like poo on the out side and well taken care of inside. I'd rather have a moderately priced reliable car and a house well taken care of inside and if funds allow then take care of the outside. For me plumbing, working appliances and outlets that don't shock me are a touch more important than siding. lol

It's not "normal" but it is common. Cars are a status symbol just as houses are, and they're cheaper. (Price tag on a "status symbol" house is $500,000 while the car is $50,000).
In addition, you pay taxes on your house each year, based on it's value. Ignorant people intentionally keep their assessed values low in order to keep their taxes low. Lastly, if you have a high amount of illegal income, it's easier to trace if you own an expensive house, while paying for a car (in cash) can keep you below the IRS radar.

They are usually the welfare recipients. They also have 7 kids running around in the front yard with no clothes on. They would rather have nice cars than to have a decent home or clothes for their children. It's very sad!

Yeah, there are a lot of people that won't even buy their kids a decent pair of shoes or enough clothes, but they sure have enough money to buy an expensive car. Its pathetic!

No, it is not normal, but unfortunately it is common. It is called skewed values. It is not something unique to America.
