I have these two white futon matresses but over time - people sitting down, dust, food - its beginning to have a faint smell and dark marks/stains. I guess it shows more cause it's white. I know now to use covers, but how can i at least clean it? It's stuffed with matterical and the fabric is so heavy u can't even put in int the washing mashine...

I think if you mix oxi-clean and water, it makes a great cleaning solution for MANY things. I've used on rugs, clothes, the fabric on my dining room chairs. It worked great on the chairs and I was worried it would ruin them. But the stains were so bad from the kids, I figured it was worth the risk.

If you take a washcloth or toothbrush, you can gently rub out the stains with oxi-clean. Or mixing water and soft scrub gel bleach would be another way.

Use a scrub brush, warm water and laundry detergent to clean entire mattress or individual spots. Be careful not to get it too wet. Allow it to dry outdoors.
Try a rug cleaner for stains.

Other tips:
Vacuum the mattress regularly to remove dust.

Air your mattress out each morning - if using your futon as a bed - by folding back the covers to the bottom of the bed for half an hour before you make it. This will also prevent moisture buildup.

Hang your futon outside in the sun to keep it fresh. Once every six months, if possible.

Flip your futon once a month if you are using it as a sofa. Rotate it each time you change the sheets if the futon is being used as a bed.

Hello!

Next time you get your carpets steam cleaned by a professional, have them do the mattress too. I think most if not all professional carpet cleaners also bring tools along for upholstry. This will help cut down on dust mites and junk too. They will have stuff to get the stains out. They're also usually willing to come out and clean just the mattress. Just be aware it's about $60-$100 depending on your location. Done this a whole bunch!!

Unfortunately you can't wash a futon mattress you have to either get stain removers like shout cloths or tide stain pens and go on the areas affected and febreeze to freshen up the mattress. You should use covers on your futon couches since that also keeps them clean, but over time eventually it will be time to replace them.

Vacuum it thoroughly, On a warm sunny day take them out into the sun. The heat of the sun and outdoors will improve the smell a lot.

Then spray them with Febreze.

After all of this keep a washable cover on them to allow you to keep the surfaces clean.

I have found that the best mattress cleaner is Ace bleach. Try a small amount and scrub gently with a nail brush. Do wear gloves as it can make your fingers itch but will not harm material. It worked for me.

phone up your local laundry and see if they clean them, it may be that they are just like large duvets. My local laundry cleans duoble duvets for about £8.00. Are they single/double size cos when they are clean you could cover them with duvet covers.
