When I remove the new card, the OS does start. My question is, do I need to add two cards. I mean, there were two original 256 mb cards to begin with. Do any additional cards need to be added in pairs?

Ya SLI is for Dual video card, Disable it so you can Your OS can recognize Your only one video card/ 512mb.

I have something with my comp, when it boots up, it says SLI gendering is disabled, for my 512 mb video card

And the reason your OS is booting up, is becuase u need a video card for boot up i think
