Hi. I want to do the basic things for my PC that I can to keep it in it in the best of shape. I also, however, do not wish to do anything too complicated. I do know a lot about computers.
Here is what i know that I can/should do: empty the recycle bin, use the tool that deletes old files, have active anti-virus and spyware softeware, scan with anti-virus, etc, and every great once in awhile I defragment the hard drive. Those are the things that I do and know that are good practices. However, I do know that people for instance, clear their registry and clear their partition table. I know about a few other things, which I don't do...

first get zeroday protection for viruses (virus protection based on activity paterns not definitions) cyberhawk good and free

next this can be complicated. go Start>run>msconfig

go to the startup tab and disable all the stuff you don't want.

next if you really want to do some tweaking go to the services,
and disable everything you don't need. (if you don't know what it is leave it or google it)

then click apply and the reboot

when you reboot it will tell you that you changed the setting click the hide never show again

click ok and you might have to reboot again.

now you should have a sleek computer running at ~190-215Mb of ram usage on idle. with AV and anti-spyware and all the stuff on your task bar.

other than that just keep your desktop clean of any downloads.
everything on your desktop has to be loaded when you startup.

and use one of those reg cleaners from the first guy BUT make a system restore before you start as they can screw up your system.(believe me that experience talking)

unload each and all the assets you have and use abode windows Defender. i could be fairly careful employing Ccleaner. whilst it cleans the registry, you will possibly be for many good sized surprises. Registry cleansing is puffed up. pass away it on my own. If issues get that undesirable, Reload the OS.
