I am reposting this because my original wording was confusing people.

My A/C compressor cycles on & off every 3-5 seconds.
My AC is not blowing cold. I know compressors have a circuit to prevent clutch engagement when refrigerant is too low. When I try to add refrigerant, the system will not accept it. Does this indicate it is full or is there is a major break somewhere? However, if the latter were the case, I would expect the refrigerant to be accepted into the system, albeit it would then be wasted. Can anyone help me diagnose the problem?

NEVER bypass a safety switch if you are not completely knowledgeable about its function and don't have pressure gages connected. this could and has resulted in serious injury.
now start by buying a freon filler adapter that has a pressure Gage on it. when you connect it (without A/C running) write down the pressure. turn the A/C on watch the pressure Gage when the clutch is engaged record the reading.
e-mail those readings to me thru yahoo answers. I check my e-mail very regular and will respond with what to do.

The only reason the system wouldn't accept refrigerant would be high pressure, which means the compressor isn't working at all. But if that were true, the low pressure switch wouldn't be causing the compressor to cycle. You shouldn't even be trying to add refrigerant without having gauges attached. You need to read the high and low sides at the same time while topping it off. The relative pressures will also tell you what's wrong if the system isn't working.

you could have a plugged orifice tube causing the suction side pressure to drop. but most likely you are just low on gas. it will only take gas if the compressor is engaged. on your firewall there is a large canister called an accumulator it has a switch on it. use a jumper wire to connect the two wires on that switch together. lay your hand on the canister and when it becomes cold shut your gas off and plug the switch back in.

All of the above information is good, but also check for a plugged condenser coil.
