We rescued a small tortoise from the side of the road next to a big development. We have cordoned off half of our garden for him and have planted some grasses and geraniums for him. He also eats some of the weeds in his enclosure. When he seems bored we give him sprouts and cucumber as well. Just want to make sure this is good enough.

1st- let's try to identify the species better. If you are in the southern US, this may be a native tortoise- Desert, Texan, or Gopher. If it IS a wild tortoise, it is best to just re-release it somewhere it can live safely. They are protected by law and make TERRIBLE pets for beginners (they really, really need to dig big burrows to feel safe and happy!)

If it IS a native and you've been keeping it for more than a few months, you can learn good care ideas at http://www.tortoise.org

If this really IS an African Leopard tortoise, you can learn good care info for this species at the above site or http://www.tortoisetrust.com.uk

Actually, Leopard Shell Tortoise's are from Africa. If it is, someone let it go, not smart, are not cheap at Pet Stores. The main food recommended are fresh greens, like Romaine, Kale, collards and veggies that are cut to size small enough for it to consume (NO ICEBERG LETTUCE). The #1 treat are Dandelion buds (little yellow flower top on a weed) They will pig out !! Yellow squash, diced carrots are good also. If you still need more suggestions, you might ask your local Vet. Fresh water is a good thing. When you get a chance, let it roam around on a grassy area, yep, they eat grass too ! Hope I was helpful, own a Pet Shop.

I have 2 leopard tortoises. I buy them the salad mixes at the grocery store. Spring mix or Mediterranean. They love squash such as yellow, butternut or even pumpkin. Make sure that any plants he eats from outside do not have pesticides or the like on them. They get pretty big around 30 pounds so make sure you give him plenty of room as he gets bigger. If you live where it gets cool make sure temps are around 90 in the day and 60-70 at night. you local pet store can help you do that. if temps are to low they are very susceptible to respiratory infections and will need to see a vet. but diet and temps are the most important. hope this helps

Here's a link to a great list of everything they can eat. Might give you some ideas. So far it sounds like you're doing great. Good on you for adopting him. :)
