I consider myself "poor". Don't know that I do benefit society. I do know that I benefit the people that mean something to me. As for being thankful, the day you or anyone else pays my bills, feeds me or my family, puts braces in my daughters mouth, or pays the 150.00X3 and up Dr. bills, then you better believe I will be thankful. We are not government supported either. I will be thankful for the day when people who think they have so much stop looking down their noses at people like me. Oh and I have made my e-mail available. If you would feel more complete in supporting someone and seeing where you money goes first hand e-mail me.I got some doozies.

The same way any of us "benefit" society. Come on. For the most part, one's personal wealth is beneficial only to himself. I personally think that the guy that works at the sewage treatment plant is of far greater value to society than the guy that designed your pricey clothes or models them in magazines. Contributing to the welfare of the poor, begrudgingly and involuntarily, does not make you a saint. Human value does not come with a price tag. Since you address me directly, I believe I did answer that question with my first sentence. Poor people are capable of doing positive things for society. Raising children (poverty is not genetic), volunteering, working public service jobs to make your life more convenient, killing your food for you, stocking the shelves of your grocery. We ALL have value to society. If they didn't have so little, we couldn't have so much. Their value is at least as great as yours. Being forced to lend support to the poor is not some value to be proud of. If you weren't smug and superior about it, or if could look at the poor with compassion, it would be a more valuable contribution.

Let me try to understand your thinking.

A person cannot benefit society because they happen to be poor --- I interpret this that you believe unless one has money they are of no benefit to society (to you personally).

A poor person should be thankful to 'those of us' who support them. (Thanking who in particular (you) and by what means should they thank you? (wash your car, take care of your kids, clean your house?)

Are you bringing by groceries or paying a utilty bill or buying a bus pass for anyone less well off than you?

Or are you one of those screaming about what your tax dollars are 'supposed' to do?

Make it personal. Help someone for real. And watch for your true blessing.

Not all "poor people" don't work and suck up welfare, but I'm assuming that's the group you're referring to. In that case I would say a sense of entitlement most likely, when the "support" is so readily given without much, if any reciprocation required, what do you expect?

I'd like to see some of that support. Schools are being shut down, tuition is going up, Section 8 housing has been done away with, food is getting more expensive...

Do you want me to continue? Or do you want to try actually opening you eyes?

You mean people on welfare or poor people in general.
I think poor people are okay. Are you a snob?
