When it comes to the Syrian hamster, you can only house one per cage. The females especially are solitary animals. However as a small animal rescuer, owner, and former breeder of both Syrian and Russian dwarf hamsters, I have found that most male Syrians will accept a Russian dwarf in the cage with them. We have 18 male and female Syrians and 8 Russian dwarf hamsters. All but one male has a Russian dwarf in the cage with them, the females don't seem to like the Russian companions however. Some of the male Syrian and Russian dwarfs have been together for more then a year now. They take turns grooming each other and sleep together. Most any one else out there will tell you what I do can't be done.
I started doing this after the mother Syrian died and left a 9 day old behind, we were lucky to have 2 Russian dwarf litters born at the same time. We took a chance and put the babies and each dwarf mom together to see what would happen, the one had no interest, while the other layed down and let then nurse, She had 5 babies of her own and tried to take oon 9 more, we did lose 4 during the next few days (the weakest), one died at 4 months (unknown why) and the remaining 4 are now over 15 months and are huge. Perhaps this is why they readily accept each other, but most likely not since we have 4 other non-related males we've put with a Russian dwarf with no problems.
You may want to try a Russian dwarf as a cage mate, but only if the one you have is a male. Just don't put 2 Syrians together, this is a disaster in the making. Even breeding pairs are housed separately.

Hhhmm... what do you get when you mix a savage hamster with another one...?

a GREAT video to put on YouTube!!!

But if you're not into the whole hamster fight thing then I'd suggest that u put them in separate cages or if you've got a big cage, then just make a barrier half way. Don't use cardboard for the barrier coz they'll chew right through it!

oh and by the way.... I don't know if this happens to everyone but in my past experiences with hamsters, I've noticed that they don't have much of a lifespan... (not my fault)

I tried to combine hamsters...horrible results and ended up having to buy another cage. But, my friend had hamsters together that were raised from babies.

As I understand it, Syrian hamsters need to be kept separately. I know other breeds can be kept in numbers though.

yes no matter what do not put 2 together, they are 2 territorial to be together and will fight which will result in the death of one of them, its best 2 put them in separate cages.
