You do not need to take a test to drive a 7.5 tonne lorry. You can drive it on your normal driving license. Though most companies will not insure you under the age of 25yrs.
You only need to take a HGV 1 or 2 if you want to drive anything bigger like a 16 Tonne or Artic.
Hope that helps a bit. For more info have a look at the DVLA website or the Road Haulage Association website.

The correct answer -
If you passed your car (Class B) test BEFORE January 1st 1997, you can drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes gross weight.
If you passed your car test AFTER January 1st 1997, you can only drive vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight. You will need to take an H.G.V. test to drive anything bigger.

Here in America, you can drive anything up to 26,000 lbs with a Class D license. Anything bigger than that, and you will need a Class B Commercial Drivers License. If the truck has a trailer bigger than 10,000 lbs, you will need a Class A Commercial Drivers License. There are also various endorsements you need depending on what you are hauling - N for liquid, gas or bulk tanks, H for hazardous materials ect.
I see your regulations are similar over in England

As the first anwerer says it will depend on the year you passed your test. I think if you passed before 1999 you can drive without any further training. if you passed after this date you need to take training to get the entitlement added to your license.
