Here is the way I do it:
Boot from the XP CD, when the menu pops up choose the repair option. Once the system copies files and gets to the GUI (graphical) portion f the repair, press ALT F10 to get a cmd window. In the command window, type "compmgmt.msc" (no quotes) to bring up the management console. Expand "Local Users and Groups", click the "Users" container. Select the administrator account, right click and choose "Set password". Change the password to whatever you want. When the repair finishes you will be able to log in as administrator with the new password you set. Afterwards you will want to check for windows updates just in case the repair replaced any previously patched files.

Response to other answers:

-Safe mode will not allow you to log in without a password
-I used to use the off line password editor by pordahl, but I beleive with XP SP2 (or maybe 1) this no longer works.

Try going into Safe Mode by pressing F8 or whatever your button is when the computer Boots up. When your in Safe Mode, Create another Admin account and delete your password through that.

This might work depending on your computer. Sometimes even in safe mode you cant just login to the admin account.

When the computer starts to boot press F8 for advanced boot options.

Use the arrow keys to select "safe mode with command prompt"

When it starts up it will have no gui (Graphic user Interface) but don't worry.

In cmd (command) type "net user Administrator xxxx"
(Where the xxxx is your desired password)

Reboot and try the new password.

Again this might work on yours. It worked on mine.
