Are you aware of the meaning in the USA of the term "dame?" It refers to a brassy and common woman. So, over here the wife of a Dame would be a wiseguy or a sailor!

If a man gets a knighthood or becomes a Baron (Lord/Peer) his wife becomes lady but not the other way round. Let's not forget that the honours system goes back about a millenium and sexism was rampant in those days.
