it will pretty much affect the baby how it affects you: the baby may be very drowsy and lethargic, sometimes they will have trouble feeding the first few hours of life because they are too tired and can't latch on (that's fine, babies actually need very very small amounts of nutrition in the first day or so of life). It should not have any long term affects on the child though, the baby is already fully developed and a real little person, as long as it is performed correctly, it is safe to the baby. It's important to weigh the good against the bad, there is probably a good reason why you must be put under, and it will be best for you and baby. Too many women are afraid to take medication that they truly need because there is a risk of side effects to the baby. In general the side effects are temporary and minimal.

Not anymore than the whole day affects the baby. It is hard to tell due to the fact that newborns sleep, eat and poop (and that is about it). It's a hard day for a new baby anyways. I had to have an emergency c-section and all the drugs involved in that. Our new baby appeared tired, but was it the whole ordeal of being "out" or the drugs? We could not tell, the doctors wouldn't administer anything that would harm the new baby.

I just took a birthing class this weekend. They said that epidurals don't affect the baby but the pain shot does it lasts two hours and if they give it to you they give it early in the labor so by the time the baby is born it's out of the babies system. Hope that helps!

anything given to the mother can effect the baby the less harm full thing for the baby is for the mom to get an epidural since that don't go directly into her blood stream and to the baby

it makes them a little sleepy but the anaesthetist can give them a reversal drug if they are really sleepy. GA's are usually just given in emergency Csections, therefore safer than waiting for an epidural

It can make the baby sleepy. For years though this is how babies were delivered- so I don't think it causes long term effects
