Sirius is the second brightest object in the southern sky right now. Its relative brightness would be easiest to detect right at dusk on a hazy evening. You know about Venus. Can you find Saturn? It is approximately the third brightest thing you can see, and is further east.

Swing your arm across the sky so that you can visualize the arc across the sky that touches both Venus and Saturn. This is called the Ecliptic.

Sirius is south of the plane of the ecliptic, and about two thirds of the way eastward from Venus toward Saturn. When it gets fully dark, you can spot Sirius by its relationship to the constellation Orion. If the three stars are Orion's belt, Sirius is the nose of Orion's hunting dog, which is standing between his feet. Sirius is sometimes called the "Dog star."

Have fun, and keep paying attention to the sky.

Possibly Sirius.

If it is below (south of) the constellation Orion (and slightly to the east), then it is Sirius.

Sirius is one of the brightest stars (Venus is brighter but a planet) in the sky, and it is bluish/white in color.
