i think it just got out of control, I actually believe that it didn't die because of the music. I think the atmosphere was just too much for people to handle. When i hear the word disco i think of "cocaine". I don't like the music, But i wouldn't say it's dead if you still listen to it then it is very much alive. Unless what you mean by dead is that there are no new artists or at least none that i have heard of.

It was just a fad... I mean at the height of disco, even rock bands did a disco track... Rolling Stones, Kiss, Blondie...etc... but like all fads the eventually die

Because the surgeon general determined that too much polyester, combined with exposed chest hair, sequins, and platform shoes, can be toxic after repeated exposure. And the disco balls and strobe lights where giving people seizures.
