I have a Sony HD tuner/DVR. I love it and I love that I don't pay a subscription to Tivo. It has a few kinks, but my favorite shows are in HD and they are free. But now they seem to be pulled from the market.

When this one dies, which I hope is a long way, will I be able to buy something similar.

And no, I don't have or want cable/satellite. Over-the-air free, baby!

Hi Charles,

All the major cable companies offer DVRs but they are getting scarce as stand alone units. Only a few are left now and they may disappear before your Sony kicks the bucket.

I prefer TiVO but I have lifetime subscriptions so have already paid my dues.

You can operate a TiVO without a subscription. You record by channel number, start time, stop time like the old VHS systems did.

Hopefully your Sony will last a long time.

You can always make your own.
PC+TV Tuner (even HD)+Windows Media OS (or Vista Premium now)

Microsoft provides an on-line TV Guide.
