Walmart has been selling a lot of jewelry electro-plated with 10k gold, which means your boyfriend either didn't read the signs in the case he got the ring out of, or he didn't understand what electro-plated meant. What is under the electro-plated is silver or another type of metal, but there is no real gold on the ring, that is why it turned your finger green.

Please don't automatically ASSUME that the ring is fake -- it is NOT necessarily true. If it is a lower grade of gold, like a 10K ring, it can be real and STILL turn your finger green!

"It is the "other" metals that are mixed with gold to harden it that are causing your skin to turn green. Gold does not cause an allergic reaction but some other metals do.

So, will you have an allergic reaction to all 10k gold jewelry? Not necessarily. It depends upon WHICH of the other metals is affecting your skin. The acidic reaction that turns your finger green is a reaction to one of the metals and pinpointing which metal is causing it is almost impossible. And since different metals can be used to harden the gold, you will probably never know which non-gold metal is causing the problem. Plus, you won't know if the next 10k item you wear contains that same metal that is causing your allergic reaction. That is why some people will insist that the 10k item they bought MUST be fake because they have worn 10k before and never had a problem. They just didn't have that problem causing metal in the other jewelry."

You may be able to have the ring dipped in a higher quality of gold to help prevent this -- or you may be able to explain to the clerk at WalMart that you are allergic to this (make sure your finger is GREEN when you go!) and see if you can get credit towards a different ring that will NOT do this to you. Good luck!

Actually, it may be real gold. See, they can't use 100% gold because it's too soft. They use other metals mixed into the gold to make it harder so that we can use it for jewelry. (Thus the difference between 14k and 10k gold...14k has a slightly higher percentage of gold.)

It's actually a chemical reaction in your skin due to the alloys (other metals) in the ring. I had a friend and co-worker...IN A JEWELRY STORE...that had this same problem. It's real gold, but if she rubbed it on her face or arm, it would make a mark...

The only real way to get around this is either to talk to an experienced jeweler and see if a rhodium plating would prevent this. (White gold only). If not, you may have to coat the inside of the ring with clear nail polish. The jeweler may have a different suggestion as well. I wish you the best of luck, but please believe me that just because it is turning you colors does NOT mean that it isn't real gold! You may just be having a reaction to the metals. Good luck!

Either it's plated and the plating is wearing off, or the alloy contains very little gold and you're very sensitive to other metals (copper is commonly used in many alloys). This is especially possible if the ring is 10kt, which means that 10 parts out of 24 are gold (not even half).
In very rare occasions, people can be allergic to gold, but unless this is a problem with your other jewelry, I'd tell your boyfriend to have better standards the next time he buys you something.
Temporary solution: you can spray a clear coat on it (I recommend either clear Krylon or an artist's fixative) and that should keep it from turning.

Hi:

It not real gold. However your sweetie couldn't afford a real gold ring. Just look at the prices of them and gold and you will know why. It is a electroplated gold on a brass or copper ring made to look like gold ring. The green is from the brass or copper reacting with the sweat from your skin when the gold plating rubbed off on your finger. Remove the ring and wash your finger. Put the ring in a safe place and Hopely when your sweetie can afford a real one . Hopely with a real diamond on it on the Happiest day of your life. Just remember his heart in the right place. Just tell him to save his money for a ring on that day. Okay

Hope this helps

well i happen to work at walmart jewelry counter and i can tell you that if it is a true keepsake that it may have a chemical left on it from cleaning. take it to the counter and see if they can verify if it is a keepsake they should know because they are very limited in their selection and to all of you who thinks walmart jewelry sucks your wrong they cannot not sell something that is inferior the government keeps a close watch on gold and keepsakes are 14kt. I also have one and i have taken it to an independent jeweler and he says it's the real deal!

fake gold doesnt usually turn u green, fake silver does. if ur not used to wearing gold, u could just be having some kind of reaction. just in case, go to walmart with friends or family and see if the ring he got u is fake. also there might be something on the ring like a chemical

I disagree with everyone of these people!!!! I have a lot of 14kt. gold diamond rings and they certainly can turn your finger green. This is because of the amount of acid in your body. If you eat a lot of fruits (oranges, apples, grapes even tomatoes) anything that contains acid it can cause the ring to turn your finger green.
All you people out there check with your jeweler and you will find out I'm right.
And Honey TRUST your boyfriend. If you don't, this relationship will never work out.

Most likely it is not real gold. Look on inside of the band, if it is unmarked or if is marked for example 14KtHGE or 14ktGF, it is either Heavy gold electroplate or Gold Fill.
Real gold would be marked 14kt,or 10kt, Sterling Silver would be marked SS or numerically .925.
Once you get the green off your finger coat the band with clear nail polish this will cut down on discoloration but must be redone occasionally.

My problem is a weird one. The 14 kt gold ring turns my ring finger green on the right hand but mot my left! I tried wearing my wedding bands on the right hand side and they did the same. Any explanations for this oddity?
