s there a router if so reset the router once the ps3 is hooked up so it will recgnise it or if there is a settings editor on the computer for the router run it.

What we did was we connected the PS3 to the ethernet port then on the computer we set up a home office network connection. It only recognised the PS3 when the PS3 was in process of obtaining ip. Then we were able to surf the net on the ps3 with no interference to the computer. Make sure you have your connection firewalled.

It should go Modem->router->then the computer ,PS3 etc. would plug into the router.
If you have a router though why do you need a switch? The reason you need a router is you cable provider runs DHCP and allows you 1 IP address which would get assigned to you Router which in turn will assign your computer and PS3 an IP which the router routes back to the Modem.

Assuming you're talking just a regular switch, what you're wanting to do won't work because you have multiple networks attached to a "dumb" device. If you want to be able to split your modem connection, you'll want something that has a switch and a router in one (like the Linksys WRT54G). If you don't, you'll have to have a pc with multiple network cards in between your modem and your switch to act as a router but that is much more complicated. Hope that helps!

I assume your talking about a cable or DSL modem?

The network should be

DSL/cable ---modem---router----switch---comp

Go to linksys.com and go through their home networking tutorial.
