Use a timer and have someone check on your house occasionally. Ask a neighbor to watch also.

Oh, off.
Just think if you were a burglar would you be fooled by a timer? I don't think so. What about the other things?
Curtains open or closed?
TV on or off?
Milk on doorstep or cancelled?
Post piled up in hallway or redirected?
Pets looked after at home or in kennels?
My father in law is so obsessive about this that when my sister in law went on holiday he went to their house twice a day to change things around, even to the extent of moving shoes around in the living room so anyone looking in would think someone had just come in and kicked off their shoes!
I look at it this way, at the end of the day if someone wants to get into your house they'll do it one way or the other, whether you've got a timer or not, there's no point worrying about it.

When I go away I usually leave my front outside light on and one in my bedroom. I should invest in a timer though to save some $$ on my already outrageous electric bill.

I use a timer so the lights go on at dusk.

I do not go away often. But when i do go i am never really worried. The last time a guy broke into my house he broke one of his feet coming out the window and the neighbour called th epolice. Don't mess me. I am a child of the Orisa.
So i am never worried.

some lights on always help...outdoor lights too.....timers are a bit too predictable
