I just had my tubes tied four months ago. My period is 16 days late. I have an appt. already, I just thought I'd ask everyone on here, just to get some idea of what to expect.

It depends. To my knowledge, the amt of HCG produced in an ectopic pregnancy is much less than a normal pregnancy. You would most likely get a faint positive but a false negative is possible too. If you do get a faint positive, get in to see a doc RIGHT AWAY!!!

Now, pregnancy is NOT the only cause of "delayed" period. Unless you know when you ovulated, you might have ovulated later than usual or not yet. If you did not ovulate, you wouldn't have an actual period (though some women do experience anovulatory bleeding).

Another possibility, though rare is a corpus luteum cyst. The follicle that held the egg before ovulation becomes the corpus luteum after ovulaton. It stays in the ovary and produces progesterone which helps the uterus prepare for pregnancy and keeps the lining from being shed until a baby has time to implant. Normally, the corpus luteum dies after 12-16 days, then you have your period. Very rarely, it doesn't die but becomes a cyst. This can delay your period even though you are not pregant and did ovulate.

It will come back positive. I had a tubal pregnancy 3 years ago and the test came out positive; both home urine test and blood test. Didn't realize at first it was tubal; it didn't show up on the ultrasounds. I didn't have my tubes tied, though. I did work with someone several years ago though who had her tubes tied and she had a tubal pregnancy later. It's really better to address it earlier rather than later because you run the risk of the tube bursting and having internal bleeding-which is what happened to me. Take a home test and if it's positive, see your dr. as soon as possible.

Well I am a medical assistant and 75% of my experiences with ectopic pregnancies was resulted in negative pregnancy tests. Missed periods with discomfort was the reason that they made an appointment to get checked out. Its good you have an appointment already, Also with your tubes tied irregular periods are common, but don't let that keep you from getting checked out. Good luck.

A urine test will come back positive though it may take longer, though at 16 days late it will be as accurate as they ever are.

A blood test will also show positive but low levels.

The reason is an ectopic pregnancy doesn't make as much hCG as a normal pregnancy.

Probably you will be referred for an ultrasound, though they may wait for the blood results.

I think that a pregnancy would come out positive, but since you have your tubes tied I believe that it is a rare chance that you are pregnant!

It would come out positive. It doesn't matter if you've had your tubes tied or not, if you're pregnant it will still come back positive

My wife had an ectopic, and her test came back positive.

The test measures pregancy hormones. Those hormones are produced whenever (and *where*ever) the embryo plants itself -- even in a tube.

It would come back positive; it doesn't matter where the pregnancy is, those tests work by measuring the pregnancy hormone in your urine and you will secrete that anyway.
