i think its because of the topics he wrote about it cause dicussions in people.everyone has different opinions about his work for example his book of mice and men some people refuse to read it whilst some people think its one of the greatest books ever written (including me) i think its all a matter of opinion

Steinbeck did not write boring books! Have you ever read East of Eden? That is seriously one of the best novels I have read, sure the first 60 pages or so are a bit dry. But once you get into it! Wow, I think I read like 300 pages in one sitting. I guess many people read Grapes of Wrath or one of his other drier novels and automatically condemn him as a "boring" and despicable writer. However, pick up East of Eden, work through the beginning, and by the end I guarantee you won't be disappointed. The parallel's he makes between Cain and Abel and his characters is astounding, and I'm not even religious. I'm serious give it a try!

He is seen as America's greatest writer because not too many American writers are that great....he is despised because he wrote very boring books....
