1. Imagine that you have done a Gram stain and determined what antibiotic to use to kill the bacterium bacilli. If you expose the bacterium to the antibiotic, how will the antibiotic kill it?

2. If you expose amoebas to the antibiotic would you expect it to kill the protozoan? Why or why not? (Hint: If you take an antibiotic, does it kill your body cells?)

1-antibiotic (cidal) may inhibit cell wall synthesis of bacteria or inhibit nucliec acid transcription or misreading of bacterial genetic code

2-No,this antibiotic do not effect protozoa
and no it do not kill your body cells except if the bacteria is intracellular as (brucella) by tetracyclines

1. There are lots of antibiotics which act in different ways. One of my favorites interferes with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall -- the bacteria die upon trying to reproduce. Another interferes with the bacterioribosomes; this interferes with the metabolism of the cell.

2. No. The antibiotics I've mentioned above are fairly specific for prokaryotes.

1. Basically there are two groups of antiobiotics:
Bacteriocidal (kills bacteria)
Bacteriostatic (stops growth)

Baceriocidal Antibiotics kill bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis... this causes weakening of the cell wall and eventually the cell explodes due to osmotic influx (cell lysis),

Bacteriostatic Antibiotics target Ribosomes involved in DNA, they basically block enzymes involved in producing new DNA, so cell growth ceases

2. Antibiotics would not affect amoeba, this is because the target structure of the antibiotic means only the bacteria is affected, since the specific structure is not present in amoeba it will remain unaffected.

E.g of cell differences between amoeba (Eukaryote) and bacteria (Prokaryote):
a) Ribosomes -> Prokaryotes=70s Eukaryotes=80s
b) Cell Walls -> Prokaryotes=Murien Eukaryotes=Peptidoglycan
