Have someone perform a compression test on the car (After changing the oil and running the engine for a bit)
If the numbers between the cylinders deviates more than 15% from one to another, it is time to get rid of the car....
If the numbers look good, it is time to change the valve seals, these are little "boots" that keep the oil in the valve covers from seeping into the valves by way of the valve guides.
This shouldn't be terribly expensive.
Bad compression...that will be pricey to fix.

Unfortunately burning oil is not an easy fix. I would check the engine's breather system to make sure that its functioning properly and not pumping oil into the air intake system. That being said its most likely a worn mechnical part inside the engine (i.e worn piston rings, valve seals etc). With the amount of miles on the engine complete rebuild or replacment would be necessary. And that might not be cost effective on an 11 year old car.

Oil burning because of bad piston rings is usually grey-white. If it is grey-black, this is caused by unburned gas because your engine is running to rich. Looking into the end of the exhaust pipe, you would also be able to wipe black soot off with your finger.
I would start with a engine une up, and look at the condition of the plugs while replacing plugs and wires. If its the ingnition module or something else, a shop or friend with a OBD engine diagnostic tool could find the problem.
Your passanger's rear rattling would be unrelated to engine problems.

170,000 miles is a lot, especially if the car was driven hard.
It needs a rebuild, nothing else is going to fix it.

Sounds like it's about to spin a bearing. Needs valves, piston rings.
