because of photosynthesis (mentain o2 and co2 balance)

1. They fix carbon, and synthesize some of the biologically important monomers and components that we don't. We need to eat them (or animals that have eaten them) to gain these monomers and components.
These monomers and components include essential amino acids and vitamins.

2. They expel oxygen into the atmosphere, which we need to breathe. We use oxygen in the final reactions for gaining energy from simple sugars.
