I think it would have to be NYC, we have restaurants on every corner. Even our coffee shops are great. We have some of the best noted chefs in the country, you just can't beat eating out here. I've been to Chicago and had some great meals, but sorry NY just wins out. But, we will never win over Paris.

I would disagree, NYC is far too international and large. I travel the US and internationally. Chicago has many outstanding restaurants, but the best chefs in the world tend to go to NY. Europeans seem to be more sophisticated in their approach to food than most Americans are. IMHO, this is more true in NYC than Chicago simply because so many people are exposed to the international community there.
That said, I love Chicago. It has great food, great architechture, wonderful people, outstanding music, and so much more.

San Francisco may edge NY if for no other reason than the superior quality of ingredients one is able to obtain fresh in California. I agree you cant beat a slice in NY. But for variety and quality San Francisco hands down.

some might say NYC or LA, and maybe New Orleans before Katrina...
Las Vegas and Chicago have their share, and San Francisco has some excellent offerings...
Now all that being said, it all depends on your tastes and how much you are willing to spend... My opinion would be that the best restaurants in the entire US are in Los Angeles

depends on what food.
best pizza is Chigago for deep dish and New York for regular.
best burger is Milwaukee
best steak is KC
best Tex Mex and Chili is Austin (or midland...gets real personal down here in texas)
best chowder is San Francisco (sorry Boston)
Overall, though, I would say New York for ritzy restaurants and Chicago or Milwauke for Blue collar food.

it's either NYC or San Francisco, because both have the most variety of any american city. no other city has the mix of ethnic, american and chain restaurants like those two.
