Actually, the minimum wage in this country is relatively high. Certainly more so than in the States.
But levels of taxation are utterly ridiculous. The "welfare state" has gotten so swollen and the civil service so useless - it's like we make an active effort to waste money in this country.
A lot of it is to do with New Labour. Not "tax" tax, but stealth tax. And then there's road pricing to come in, as well...
Bloody government.

Actually, there's no way to calculate this. If you first calculate all government spending, and figure out what proportion of GDP that would be, you can get very close.
However, even that doesn't take into account the "invisible tax" that we pay in the form of higher interest rates caused by the government deficits consuming such a large portion of available capital.
Here in the US, it's a LOT higher than we dumped your tea in the water for.

I read a study once by Civitas (I think it was) , that was suggesting that the 'average' person 'spends' over 80% of their gross earnings on taxes each year.
This was based on being a drinker/smoker of moderate consumption, taking one foreign holiday a year, 12,000 miles pa in a car earning the national average wage.
The only thing I can't recall is whether it 'added' back any benefits they might get for children etc.
I was a bit sceptical as it has a 'tory' leaning, but you could try their web-site.

Everything here is dearer than the rest of the world or am I wrong especially compared to the cr*p wages we get. Unless your a human rights lawyer how skint are we becoming under Labour.!!!!!! But all the while people are willing to vote Labour,so Labour will continue to increase taxes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its certainly NOT going to get better, not for Joe public anyway!!!!!

Don't go there, unless you want to totally depress yourself.
Add flight surcharge, insurance tax, airport tax etc. etc.
No wonder the welfare state can look after those who don't want to work, although it was never meant to be that way.
