Twenty five years back, he was seeking a new way to package black pop for the masses, that the average late baby boomer and GenXer, infected with the Irony epidemic, wouldn't be embarrassed about liking. I think he miscalculated, and his squiggle symbol/name became one of the most popular punchlines of the day. --OR WAS IT MISCALCULATION? Maybe he was one of the first wave to realize that being reviled in the headlines is still being in the headlines.
Bottomline, he's a shrewd entertainer and businessman. He can reinvent himself, as we have seen.
Freak? Sort of... an arty boy dandy. Unique? Yes, his music and style was influential.
