I find this a rediculous question. Exactly when were we not a bilingual country. Walk into any store and you will find information not only in English but in at least one other language. Purchase an item and the instructions will invariably be in at least four languages. When I need to call the insurance comapany or the light comapany or , hey, pick a comapany, I am asked if I need assistance in Spanish. And that is in a midsized Indiana city. Larger areas, say, Orlando, Fl offer 3 or 4 different translations as the norm. Yes English is our primary language, well, at least to the best of my knowledge. Our world changes so rapidly it could be in competion with another language in the USA by now. Spanish comes to mind. But there is no way anyone could even begin to believe that we are not a bilingual country, trilingual, hey who knows how many languages are spoken in this country. There are people here from all over the world. We hold territories that were not English speaking countries in the first place. How could anyone expect anything else to happen. We have to learn to adjust. And for all of those folks out there who want to complain about it, honestly people, get over it. This country has always been a melting pot of other nationalities. It has been what has made us strong. Let's not let a simple thing like language weaken us. English is NOT the only language in the world. Parlais vous Francais? Hablas Espanol?
Good! Thats wonderful. And as for copying Canada? Who cares?
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"....

Nowhere in there does it say, "But learn to speak English first!"
