India became a republic on 26th January, 1950 (not 1947). It gained independence from British rule on 15th August, 1947. Republic Day follows Independence Day and so there is a gap of about two and a half years between the two dates. Every year15th August is being celebrated in India even now as Independence Day and 26th January every year is celebrated as Republic Day.
