The same reason that a warranty for any product is important.
It gives you protection against hardware malfunctions, which happen every now and then.

The way computer warranties work is, they are kind of like insurance, in case your PC malfunctions. They make a lot of money for the manufacturer, because if the PC runs well for the time of the warranty, they got that money from you and didn't have to do anything for it.
On the other hand, if you didn't get a warranty and your PC breaks, and it's the maker's fault, they'll charge you an enormous amount of money to fix it for you. You can also take your PC to a neighbourhood shop and get a technician to fix it for less money, but that doesn't really ensure that your PC is properly repaired.
Important tip: if a particular PC model is not offered with a warranty, chances are it will break more easily and the manufacturer knows that. Stay away from it, because you might spend all the money on the PC and lose it all when it breaks(this is more for laptops, because desktops are easier to fix and parts are easier to replace).
In general, a simple warranty with basic options is the right balance between safety and savings.

It depends what kind of computer warranty. Personally, I prefer the 'accidental damage protection' by HP. If you get stuck with a 'retard' computer, you can run it over with a truck, and they will give you a new one, free.
The warranty is important because without it, you'll have to take it to a computer technician, and you'll be paying big bucks to get it fixed.
