Someone once said that, "only a being with a soul is worried about whether it has one."

But since there's not a whole lot of scientific evidence demonstrating the existance of souls, it's largely a matter of speculation. One study that I'm familiar with found that animals did not have souls but humans did. And theologies are all over the map on this one - some ascribe souls to everything that is (and some things that aren't!).

So it's probably better just to leave it up to other factors. Does it make you happier to believe you have a soul? Does believing you have a soul interfere with your activities in any significant way? If, like most people, your answers were yes and no, then go ahead and believe. You'd be a fool not to.

I'm probably not the best person to answer this, but, I'm not even sure that the 'soul' exists, how do we know that we are only aware because we have a brain that tells us that we are?

yeah yeah I know, don't answer a question with another question, but can any one prove it to me that the belief in ones soul is the only thing that gives us a soul?

And so to answer you, no, I do not believe that awareness proves that you have a soul.

No, consciousness is evidence that you have a brain. We know that thought and consciousness is associated with lots of complicated chemical and electrical interactions in the brain. When the brain is damaged or altered or drugged consciousness is affected. The evidence stongly suggests that when the brain quits functioning consciousness ceases.

Yes, our most intrinsic awareness or consciousness is the characteristic of soul or the emancipated self. It would be foolish to attribute our awareness to a mere function of brain as many want to believe and present coma as the proof...... certainly not... awareness is very different from any physical sensation and therefore can not be a function of a brain which itself is merely physical.

A soul? Some everlasting bit of you that has always been and always will be? From my view in the twilight years, my soul is a bit of a burden. When you are young it's a romantic notion.
Would suggest reading about the legend of Faust who sold his soul to the Devil.

Evidence? Yes, it's a good reason to think that there's a very real possibility that you have a soul.

Is it enough evidence to justify your belief that you have a soul, if you have no other evidence? Maybe not.

No. Your awareness means that you are able to distinguish yourself from your surroundings. Thinking means you are able to prove your own existence. But the ability to think does not mean that every thought is correct, or logical or even vaguely lucid. It only means you are thinking.

Your awareness, or consciousness, is evidence that you are aware, or conscious. Now, what are you aware, or conscious, of??
