I have a new Compaq Presario notebook but it has no place to plug in an external mouse. Do new mouses plug in to a USB port or what? Also no line-in. Do I use the mic in?

They are just cheap skating. You will have to use a USB mouse and using the Mic socket is likely to produce distorted audio as it's sensitivity is much higher than a line in socket.

Mice for laptops generally plug in to the USB port these days. When you go looking for a mouse, it will say where it plugs in, and most will say USB - make sure you pick something you actually have, and since you actually have a USB port that's a good choice.

Also, if you want to input sound of any sort it can be called either "mic in" or "line in," but the former is more common. They're the same thing, just a different name.

Yes the mouse plugs into the usb port, the usb ports can be used for most anything. Newer laptops don't always have a ps2 port.

Yes you can use the mic in for a line in, for that matter you can usually configure any of the ports to do either input or output.
soundman usually comes with computers based on realtek soundcards.

depends on the mouse. if it's usb then the usb port. it could be a ps1, which is a round plug, which i prefer, it leaves my usb port open for my digital camera, you can plug it into the external keyboard jack on the back of the laptop.
