It rather depends on what you plan to knit. For fashion knitting check out berrocco.com. However, the yarn you expect to use should also have free patterns on its website as well.

Yarn companies offer a number of patterns and list them by the experience required to make the finished product. One of my favorites is LionBrand.com. They offer free directions and also show pictures of the stitches.
