No, if there is a lightening storm, you should shut off your computer and unplug it if you dont' have a surge protector. Do the same for your tv, and audio equipment. If you get a lightening strike close by, you could get a surge that would ruin your electronic equipment.

It depends. Always use a surge protector, but realize that your cable / fiber optic or telephone line you use to connect to the net may not be surge-protected, and in most cases isn't. So, if lightning travels along these lines back to your PC, it can totally ruin it.

I do, but I have my computer and equipment connected to a surge protector. If you have extremely valuable information on your computer, such as for work, I would say to wait til the storms over.

If the lightening is close to you--it could be dangerous.

They say that you should not shower or use water at all, and should unplug everything electric when there is a bad thunderstrom nearby. You should also not use home phones (you can use cell phones).

yes, why wouldn't it be?
unless you're worried about the power going out, too.
even then you still don't have to worry about your computer being damaged if you have a surge protector. but that has to do with power supply to your comp, not with being online.
