Dell puts too much crap in their notebooks. They drain faster than better engineered notebooks. Take my MacBook Pro, for example. I can run for 3-4 hours between charges.

Actually dells are ok.

Check all your power saving settings, might be you're not running enough power saving like cpu speed, hard drive, and monitor dimming.

One way to see whether it's your pc or battery is swap batteries from the same model and see what happens. If it works 4 hours, you know the battery is messed up.

Also, Dell (actually Sony) had a batch of bad batteries. Check the Dell we site to see if you get a free exchange.

Click on the battery logo in the toolbar and select power settings. There you can switch to power save mode which enables you to use it for longer. Or you can create a new power plan that has the powerotuput you need but conserves power. Also, remove usb devices, turn off the wireless function, with Fn + f2 (I think) and lower the screen brightness with Fn + down key. A bright screen can use more power than a processor and RAM.

Dell computers consume more power than other notebooks. This in return gives you better performance but doesn't help battery life.
