Yes, you can. I have done it many times. First, you have to find out the "e-mail address" of your phone. To find it out, send a text message from your phone to your e-mail account. Then when you check you e-mail, it should be there along with the sender. This is the e-mail address that you need to use to send stuff to your phone. It is different for each wireless carrier, so this is the best way to find out.
P.S.- You can even send pictures and save them to your phone.

Yes you can and there's several ways you can do it. Every mobile carrier has an extension to the mobile number as an email address (such as 1234567890@tmomail.net for tmobile customers) or you can simply email mobile number @teleflip.com as well. I would recommend to remove your signature or use a period as your signature otherwise most email service providers like to "tag" it with a "this was sent from our email service" type of message which may carry it over the limit of sms (140 characters) charging the receiver as a mms.

yes you can send a text from email to cell phone. Like say its to a sprint phone it would 5555555555@messaging.sprintpcs.com, all the companies have stuff like that you just need to find out what it is.
