I'm doing a peice of coursework on wheter or not we should test medicines on animals. This is going to sound really vague, but I heard a quote from some random guy a long time ago. He said something about animals not being able to feel pain. If you know what I mean, please can you put the quote and who said it??? It would be really helpfull!!! THANKS!!!

By the way, I'm not saying I agree with what he says because I am an animal lover and I am totally AGAINST animal testing!!! I was just going to put the quote in to show what some people used to think and how we think now.

I don't know exactly what kind of answer you're looking for, or who that quote was by, but it's absolutely untrue! Haven't you ever heard a dog whimper or whine when it was injured? Or see an animal limp in obvious pain? And they absolutely can think! Don't you ever hear those stories about dogs saving peoples lives? If animals can be trained, then they must be able to think! Not to offend you or anything, just something to think about.....

That is a myth. It was popular back around the 1950's, probably begun by experimental scientists who needed to convince themselves that they were not causing pain to the animals that they were torturing. But it is clear that this is completely untrue. Pain is a basic function of the body, designed to warn the creature of damage. As this can happen in the wild, there is no reason to believe they don't feel it. And simple observation of animals in captivity demonstrates that they can and do suffer quite often, sadly, even under 'humane' care. It is obscene to pretend otherwise.

You're thinking of the French philosopher Rene Descartes. I can't find the exact quote, but it was to the effect that animals (like plants) aren't sufficiently conscious to feel pain. This was a ridiculous assumption but a lot of people believed it. It was even believed by medical doctors that human infants couldn't feel pain, and babies were operated on without anesthesia well into the 20th century.

If animals cant feel pain or think then why can they learn tricks and why are they scared of people who beat them? I would suggest that if you want your teacher to give you a passing mark, you dont quote people who have no idea what they are talking about.
