I think they are trying to be "different"...but they desparately want to fit in with a crowd, & don't feel like jocks, or preps, or whatever other stereotype, so they dress like the other freaks. Or they are just trying to get attention.

It's called asserting their individualism. Many of us do it when we are teens. We were "hippies," some in the 70's were disco nuts, then came Goth, grunge, mullets, etc.
Each generation tries to be as individual as they can (while not actually being individuals if they still follow a crowd).
There is nothing wrong with teens searching for their own identity. In fact, it may help them to become more open-minded and less judgemental as adults.

What identifies them as Liberal?

Ever seen a skinhead? As conservative as they come, and just as freakish.

Same goes for the Columbine "Trenchcoat Mafia"--ultra conservative and equally freaky.

They see a bleak future and see know reason to conform. They want to rebel against authorityy, particaularly their parents and show independence.

Please explain freaks. people dress they way they feel. That does not make them freaks.
