Look at the fin on the platie's underside. If you fish is a female this fin, called the anal fin, is rounded kind of like a fan. If the fish is male its anal fin is long and skinny. Females are also larger.

At pet stores male and female platies (and other livebearers, such as guppies) are kept in different tanks. Next time just remember which one it is.

Usually you can't the sex of many other fish, so this trick won't be of use. It does, however, work on all other livebearers. You can kind of guess the sex of other fish with the knowledge that females are more rounded and are less colorful compared to males. Females also tend to be larger.

If you have any more questions you can always ask some one at the pet store. They always know what they are talking about.

I hope this helps

Sure, it's really quite simple. Look along the bottom of the fish nearer to it's tail. There is a fin there called the anal fin, right under it end of it's belly. On a female platy this fin looks like a normal fin. On the male it is modified into a long thin tube shape.

In Plattys, the male is generally smaller and more brightly colored. Trust me, it won't be long before you know exactly which ones are females when they start having fry. Also, if you don't know it already, livebearer females can store sperm so they can continue to have fry for a period of time even without a male in the tank.

Check the anal fin on the fish...(on the belly nearest the tail). The female has a flat edge to it and the male has kind of a pointed end to it.
