I had to buy a smaller size boot because Doc Marten does not make half sizes and the boot feels good now but the toe is tight because of the steel toe. I was wondering if there is a tool to stretch the steel just enough to feel comfortable.

many shoe repair stores do have tools for slight alterations in steel toes. the tool is similar to what is used to stretch a point on the shoe for a bunnion. The tool will only very slightly distort the metal toe cup and will not affect it's ability to protect. They do not heat it it is cold worked in place.

I assume you bought steel toed boots because you are doing some kind of construction or demolition work. I also noticed that someone suggested that you buy a new pair of boots. That person is right. And while you may not want to do that because of the price of good steel toed boots, let me remind you that the steel is there to protect your feet. You may not think much of your feet but you are on them all day. Imagine life with a missing or damaged foot. My steel toed boots saved my feet from being crushed under a load of lumber a few years ago. Accidents happen - safety requirements are there for a reason.

no. you won't be able to alter the steel toe. try red wing boots next time. they make half sizes and extra wide widths in a full line of shoes and boots. i'd be surprised if you couldn't find one to fit both your needs and your feet. the price might scare you at first, but the wear like iron and will last for a good long time with proper care.

DO NOT alter the steel in the boot, buy the proper size and give away, trade or sell the ones you got. if the boot failed and you lost your toes you would regret it forever. heating the steel would destroy its strength.

Bite the bullet and buy a new pair.

You can take it to a shoe repair shop and see if they can heat it up and stretch it a little like they do with the leather.
