I am shortly going to be connecting a computer to the internet via broadband. It was previously connected to the Internet via phone line and so has AVG loaded. (This is now out of date)

Once connected (or before if it is possible) I need to install a Firewall. Can anyone recommend a free one downloadable from the internet? Can I load it on to say, CD via another computer and load it on before I connect ot can I only do it once on line?

I presume the outdated AVG will look for updates and update itself?

Many Thanks

Jan

I've always depended on ZoneAlarm free you can get at www.zonelabs.com

Don't let anybody try to tell you that you need a Norton product (It's bloatware junk)

ZoneAlarm offers a free firewall but I would advise you go with a router instead as it has a built-in firewall and offers more protection than any software firewall ever could.

Don't take chances, get a router and also run AVG anti-virus to be on the safe side. Even then, you'll never be 100% protected.

hi Dude, you need to think of of a firewall very equivalent to you think of of the lock on your front door. It factors some protection, in case you employ it, whether that's not a hundred%. there are strategies around it. All firewalls have their subjects, whether, they're going to save ninety 5% of the human beings out of your gadget. There are a collection of human beings, and bots obtainable which will attempt to hack your gadget. ascertain you know how the "lock" works and make effective not one of the abode windows are open for human beings to get around the door lock. Does that make it a splash extra handy to comprehend? Tom I choose hardware firewalls over utility ones. utility ones take in useful factors on your laptop, which you opt to apply for what you opt to do. Why waste your laptop ability attempting to combat intruders. Tom

Hi, I only want to point out this: IF you have windows XP there is already a firewall inbuilt., the one included in SP2 (servicepack 2) works as the other free ones.
Windows with SP1 not so good but it works and with broadband it is recommended to update to SP2...
Some people will mabye, tell you the inbuilt isnt good but they are simply wrong.
