Cook, clean. A haircut gift card. I would have just loved it if someone would have made meals or individual portions for me to pop in the micro. What a nice thought.

Yeah it be nice if you can cook for her like other people had suggested if you can some soup if she's breastfeeding , she's going to need to eat a lot. And if she's breastfeeding soup is good cause breastfeeding mother's need to take in a lot of fluids. What I would suggest is something I would like for myself is a stretch mark cream, one that might be good I hear is Stri-vectin. I don't know how good those cream's are though. Or maybe some new clothes. I just had a baby about 3 weeks ago and I don't think I have any pants , jeans that fit and I would like to go and not wear sweat's. Also another thing that would be good is something like a keepsake box a company named Pearhead makes nice ones.

A gift basket with realxing items such as candles, lotions, cooling eye masks, maybe a robe would be nice. Another nice idea would be a gift certificate for a massage or to a photography studio for mommy & new baby pics. She would probably really appreciate any of these. If money is an issue you might just offer to bring lunch and sit with the baby while she showers and takes a nap. I would suggest to offer to babysit, but most new mothers don't want to leave thier new arrival yet. Anything letting her know you are thinking of her will be appreciated.

A pampering kit. I would say a trip to a spa is not the best idea as a new mother would probably not want to leave her baby with anyone that soon. Try and find things she can use at home. How about nice bath foam/salts along with some relaxing music on cd.

I have to agree with some of the other people... preprepared meals are always great or a gift card to somewhere like The Olive Garden (I suggest them because it's a calm environment so it won't be too great of a shock to the baby, they are really catering to people with children, and their food is just excellent), Bath and Body works is a good idea but for a new mom, I would suggest some lotion from Victoria Secrets more... get some of the cashmere lotion in Heavenly and a bathrobe or pair of slippers... no new mom is going to want to go all out so having a good quality lotion and plush robe is a great way to pamper in a short amount of time.

Maybe a few gift cards for take out. Go over to her house with a meal or snack like cake and coffee or tea, and gift her with some gift cards! SHe'll appreciate it because being so tired with the baby, she probably doesn't want to think about what meals to cook!

depending on how much you want to spend here are some ideas.
a gift cert for a massage
" " for a haircut/do
pay for a cleaning lady to come once a fortnight for a month (some only charge $50 for each visit)
offer to do her laundry for her
cook a few meals that are easy to just heat and eat
buy her a years membership to a video store/some dvd box sets
etc

Something I always do when a friend has a baby is to take over a meal. I usually take stuffed shells, salad & bread - all they have to do is put it in the oven - put on the dressing and cut the bread.
