I just don't get it. I was not trying to make a network, just wanted to see if my laptop could replace my desktop in case of sudden desktop failure(it's getting old). When I did it, I couldn't get the laptop online. What was I doing wrong? It's a cable connection.

Is there a direct coax input on either pc, or do you use a modem? You probably need to insert the cd( if there is one) for the modem into the laptop. Has the laptop ever been used for a cable connection, or for the internet at all? You might need to go to internet options in the control panel, go to connections, go to setup, run the setup wizard and that might help. good luck
