Hi there,

To begin with I am not sure exactly what PP is saying when she states that clomid probably wont work for you first cycle and that there is a "special way to take it". Clomid needs to be taken orally once a day for 5 days early in the cycle that is all. Also taking clomid for up to 8 cycles can actually be dangerous and is necessarily a good idea. Basically if pregnancy is not achieved within 6 cycles it is a good idea to move onto stronger meds such as injectables (which I am now on).

Another issue is that metformin takes at least a month to affect your egg quality and in most case up to 6 months so taking it now is unlikely to salvage your cycle. A 15.5mm follie on day 12 is a normal sized follie since mature means 18-20mm and follies grow on average 1 - 2 mm a day so by day 14 you would probably have a size 19mm folly which is well within normal.

I would have a clomid break next cycle (if this one results in BFN) and continue to take the metformin at a therapeutic dose (usually at least 1700mg a day) and in a few months resume the clomid again.

Remember that it isn't unusual to only develop 1 follicle on clomid although a lot of women produce more. The incidence of twins on clomid is only around 5% so it isn't like most women are producing lots of follies. I didn't produce any except for two cycles and they were small, weak follies anyway.

Clomid is not a miracle drug and it may or may not work for you...but if it doesn't there are plenty of options still available for you. I am currently on injectables and so far have had a wonderful, strong response :-D

Good luck with everything.

I have PCOS and am on both Clomid and Metformin. Hun, you sound a little confused as to what is going on with your meds. Metformin you take everyday, to help the symptoms of PCOS, help the ovaries, and all that. Clomid you take on a cycle...there is a certain way to take it. You probably will not get PG straight away. Sometimes it takes 3-8 cycles of Clomid, or more. Sometimes it does not work at all.

Well I only took clomid one cycle and I had two good follicles now I am expecting twins so I don't know what is going on with you. I ovulated on day 16. And they gave me an hcg shot to release the eggs!

I took clomid to help me ovulate...but not because of pcos...it worked for me. I was pregnant the first time in 3 - 4 cycles...I lost that one, and had a d&c and tried again, and was pregnant within 3 cycles and carried to term. You may want to do more research on pcos to see what your options are.

I know I'll probably get thumbs down for this, but I have to say:

I don't want this to sound ignorant, because yours is a good question ... but, why did your doc put you on clomid after only six months of ttc? Many docs have patients wait a year. I guess your PCOS may make it harder to get preggo, but that seems like a really short ttc period. Also, why didn't you ask your doc what exactly these medications do before you put them in your body? Take control and be an empowered patient. Ask questions. You're not going to offend the doctor and they appreciate when patients get involved in their care. Good luck!

Sorry, but how can you be on this medication and not know what it's doing to your body? Didn't your doctor explain to you what these medications do? I think you need to call your doctor and have them explain it to you. How are you going to get pregnant if you don't know what you are supposed to be doing and when?
