I'd consider any such email a hoax. Why send out mass notices to people that a celebrity has died? That doesn't typically occur because we end up hearing about it ad nauseum on the television, radio, internet, newspaper, etc.
Be suspicious of anything you get that doesn't sound quite right, or that you question why anyone would send it out to others. Do some research online and if you can't verify it, then dismiss it until proven otherwise.
I checked snopes.com but there's nothing about this issue on their site that I could find. They are a good resource for checking out potential hoaxes.

yes its a hoax
someone is sending emails about that to everyone, its best not to open it due to the fact that it has a hardcore virus that kills your harddrive

I couldn't find anything on the net that would suggest that he died. Maybe it's a hoax after all? I dunno. I hope he's not dead. That would suck. :(
